Pickles..........

When summer arrives, so does canning and pickling season. This is one of my many pleasures in life. Those famous little "pings" when the jars seal, what a great feeling of accomplishment.
These are bread and butter pickles and one of my favorites.

High Prices..........

If you think our prices are high, you should check out New York City!! $5. for a dozen eggs and $9. for a jar of jam from the BFM!! When you think things are bad at your local grocery; think about NYC. Maybe you won't feel so bad. Aren't you glad you live where you do?

Flatbread........

I celebrated my birthday early today and had some chicken, spinach, bacon flatbread at a local Italian restaurant for lunch. So yummy!! This is what I brought home after lunch. They served me 4 pieces, just like this, so 8 triangles in all. More than I needed, but so good I had to eat 6 of them. I had the other 2 and the 2 breadsticks for supper this evening.

Surprise........

It's always nice to get a surprise, especially when it is flowers. Absolutely beautiful roses with hydrangeas. The vase is a painted Mason jar and so cute as a vase.
Don't you just love a nice surprise?

Old CD Case........Into A Bagel Sandwich Holder........

Did you know that the perfect carrier for a bagel sandwich is an old CD Case? You know, the case that holds new CDs and has a spindle in the middle. It's perfect for a bagel. Make your sandwich and then put the bagel over the hole in the case and whala!, you have a nice safe place to put your sandwich till it is time to eat it. What a great idea. I'm thinking maybe perfect for a picnic lunch or maybe just "brown bagging it".

Vacation........

I recently returned from a great vacation and the each morning I was there, I saw an amazing sunrise.

The sun is just beginning to peek above the horizon. It's just giving you a hint of the beauty to come. (If you are patient)

The sun has risen for the day. I was able to see this gorgeous sunrise each morning and you can believe I was at the river so I could get a great view.
I was also able to get some beautiful river photos as well.

Dumplings.....My Comfort Food........

Everyone has their comfort food. Maybe it's mac n' cheese, pizza or something else. But everyone has one. Mine is chicken and dumplings. So today, I feel the need for a little comfort and for supper, I'm making dumplings and plan to eat a whole bowl of them and a cole slaw with vinaigrette salad dressing.
What's your comfort food? When was the last time you made it?

Fun With Photography........

This was a photo taken during the summer. But I like to play a bit with photos and the purple photo is after I played a bit with it. So fun.
It's amazing how you can create a different look by playing with a photograph.

Moving Colors in a Photograph.......

In the cold, wintery days we have been having, one must find things to do inside. Playing with photography is so much fun and one of my favorite things to do. This was a lovely beach photo, till I started moving the colors around. How fun is that? Now I have an abstract I call, "Runaway Crab".

This purple one started out as a set of candles. I call it "Luminere" as the small flame at the top, illuminates the picture.

Pens........That Don't Work.......

How many of you have a drawer full of pens that don't work? Be honest; I know you do. I reached for several pens this morning and none of them worked. So I took all my pens, tried them on paper; and if they didn't work, into the trash they went. Now when I reach for a pen, there won't be a problem. We all have that junk drawer with paper and pens in it. When you can buy pens for 3/$1 at the Dollar Tree Store, there is no need to keep pens that don't write. Some, you have probably had for years. I know I did!!

A Local State Park.......

Sometimes dreams come true and you find the perfect cabin to rent for your specific needs. I found that cabin. This is the view from that cabin. There are so many cabins at the park. You really need to check them out to find one that suits you.

This is a little garden area not far from the river. There are also benches to rest on, pathways to walk on, and a deck to just sit and relax by the river and perhaps eat your lunch. Who could ask for more?

Here is a photo of part of the deck. Doesn't that look like a great place to sit and read a book and watch the river?

Measles..........

We seem to be having an outbreak of Measles here. Why.....because parents got the idea it was cool not to vaccinate their children. Measles were eradicated 15 years ago from here. Why would conscientious parents deny this protection to their children? Measles can cause Pneumonia, Blindness and even Death. Do you really want to take this chance with your children's lives? Wake up people, Measles are preventable!!
Do the right thing and vaccinate your children, it's not cool to play roulette with their lives.

Cafe Bengali........

If you have not heard of Cafe Bengali, you must give it a try. On these frigid evenings, nothing is better than a nice mug of Cafe Bengali. If you add just a bit of Amaretto, it is even better. I mean, chocolate ice cream, coffee, Amaretto and whip cream. What is not to like!!!
Cafe Bengali
3/4 cup heavy whipping cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1 pint chocolate ice cream
4 cups freshly brewed coffee, hot
Freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish
Combine the cream and sugar in a chilled metal bowl. Using a whisk or hand mixer, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Set up four coffee mugs. Add two scoops of ice cream to each. Pour 1 cup coffee into each. Top with a scoop of the whipped cream and garnish with nutmeg. Serve immediately.
Note: If you wish, a bit of Amaretto makes this divine! If you like; you can even garnish with some of those leftover candy canes from the holidays. It's your mug of Cafe Bengali so garnish it the way you like it.

Gruyere Cheese Straws..........

There are still a few more "get-togethers" going on and this is a simple and easy snack. Give it a try and see if you don't agree with me.
Gruyere Cheese Straws
Sprinkle 1 cup of Gruyere grated cheese on your counter or pastry film, top with a sheet of thawed puff pastry. Sprinkle 1 more cup of Gruyere cheese, mixed with 2 tsp dry mustard on top of the puff pastry. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Roll out the puff pastry to a 12 inch square. Cut into 1 inch strips and twist each strip 2-3 times and transfer to a parchment paper lined sheet. Bake at 375F until puffed and browned in spots, 15 to 18 minutes. To serve, just put in a clear glass or on a tray. Be sure to make plenty as these will go very quickly.
