Paupers' Cemetery

On vacation I read about a Paupers' Cemetery. Having never seen one, I decided to go and wander about reading the head stones. Well, back in the years when the local poor house was in operation, they marked the graves with wood. Now these many years later; the wood has deteriorated and the graves are no longer marked. The log book for this cemetery has long since been lost as well. So now it is a weed patch with no way of knowing who is buried there. The owner of a local business has taken it upon himself with another man, to clean it up. That's why you see a pile of brush and scrubs. It seems now their burial place is being given the respect the dead should receive. I couldn't help but think; "Forgotten in Life, Forgotten in Death". It makes me wonder how many more Paupers' Cemeteries or Potters' Fields are in the same shape, with no grave markers. and no name to even designate it is a cemetery. Perhaps the next time I see this place it will have cedar marker at least saying this is Paupers' Cemetery. After all, it is hallowed ground and people are buried there.

St. Mary's Church

On my vacation, I stopped in at the church I went to as a child and teenager. It was the Cathedral church at that time and the church I had hoped to get married it. But my folks moved to another parish so that dream went out the window. Also, the more I thought about walking down that aisle on my wedding day, the longer the aisle got. It has changed some but isn't as big as I remembered as a child. The second photo is the choir loft. I sang in the choir in High School as did most of my friends. It was just sort of expected of the older students. Then they had a Children's choir for the little elementary school children. Just another of the many shares from my vacation.

Metal Decorations

When I stayed at the Westview B&B I went exploring all the grounds to see what I could find. Here I found these lovely birds. They fit in so well with all the landscaping and made my exploring so fun. There were other decorations that I will show you another time. But for now, you can enjoy these.

More Sunsets......

These are some of the beautiful sunsets I was privileged to see while on vacation. Every night the colors were different and each time more spectacular than before. These photos were taken on different nights, different times, and different distances. There was nothing more beautiful to see than these lovely sunsets each night at the Westview Bed and Breakfast. The B&B is out in the country so there are no tall buildings to obstruct the view.

The Secret Door

I found this amazing little door when I was out walking. It clearly goes underground and the door has been well maintained. It even has a light above the door. The more I looked at the door each day, I started to wonder....Hmmm. Well, you all know I am big on wondering. I imagined it was a maze of tunnels going where, I don't know. Then I thought perhaps it was a wine cellar, it made perfect sense, since it was underground. But then........I let my imagination really go and decided it was the door to some Leprechauns. A whole city of them underground doing what Leprechauns do! Like baking cookies, filling pots of gold for the end of rainbows, playing tricks and of course the drudge work of everyday living. Even underground there is work to be done. Okay, I have brought you along with my imagination long enough. But the truth is, it does lead to a 42 foot tunnel. You ask to where? Maybe it goes to a tornado shelter, I just don't know.

Stairway To The Stars

There's a song called "Stairway To The Stars" sung by Ella Fitzgerald many years ago. While I was out walking, I saw this tall ladder in a tree. It didn't look like they were trimming the tree; so it really didn't seem to belong there. Then I started to wonder; as I often do; had I happened along one of the many stairways to the stars? I mean after all, there must be a lot of them with all the people on this earth. Perhaps this is how the stairs start and this one just isn't finished yet. At night, it looked as though it reached the stars. I couldn't help but wonder.......
What do you think?

Glorious Sunset

This was one of the beautiful sunsets I enjoyed at Westview every night but one. I could sit on the sitting porch of my suite and nothing could be more beautiful than watching the sun set each night over the plains. I have more sunset photos and will share them later on. This is by far, my most favorite. Each night the colors were just a bit different and each one was a sight to behold.

Westview Bed & Breakfast II

I had some spare time this evening so thought I would share a bit more. Here are three of the several rooms I had available to me at the Westview Bed & Breakfast. Everything is done in a country motif and very cozy. The kitchen is stocked so you can cook if you are going to be there for a few days. There are all kinds of spices and condiments to use. So get your groceries and you can cook till your heart's content.
The living room has all kinds of historical books about Nebraska, the history of the B & B, birds and flowers native to the State and other things of interest. There are also checkers and chess boards set up if you have some spare time. It was the perfect place to cozy up in the evening to read. I must have read at least eight books while I was there. I was fascinated to read all about the area and the State. So much information in one place was unbelievable.
The bedroom has a TV in it that I guess also had movie and CD capabilities. But until the last day, the TV never went on. They were predicting bad weather, so I wanted to know when to leave for home to miss the bad thunderstorms. Needless to say, the storms held off till tonight. There was a lovely spa and fireplace in the room; which I used three of the four nights I was there; just before going to bed for a good night's sleep. As you can plainly see, I was quite comfortable and really enjoyed my stay.

Westview Bed & Breakfast I

As I said in the previous post, I have been away for a few days. I took a mini vacation just to chill out and relax. That's exactly what I did. I stayed at the Westview Bed & Breakfast. The first photo is the front view of the building. The sunsets there are spectacular. I have several photos to share in later posts. The second photo is a side view of the building.
There were all kinds of snacks and yummies waiting for me when I arrived. Blueberry bread, ice cream Drumsticks, assorted cookies, sodas and candies and nuts. So many choices!
I had given them my choices for breakfast which they provided and then even more goodies. The rooms are very comfy and nicely decorated. I will share those tomorrow. I had a couple cloudy days as you can tell but I was taking photos anyway. There was only one morning when I could not take a long walk.
Jim and Colleen Burden are the owners. If you want to read about the history of it; go to their website at http://www.westviewbb.com
Email them at westviewbb@inebraska.com
Tel: 402 470-6000 - Fax: 402 470-0006 to make reservations. It has quite an interesting history.

Blooms And More Blooms....

I was gone for about five days and upon my return the buds of my Christmas Cacti were blooming. They were certainly worth the wait. Even if it took me 7 years to get them to bloom. One is blooming in dirt, the other one is blooming in water, go figure. Now if they will just bloom each year, I will be thrilled. They are absolutely gorgeous this year and I had to share them with all of you. It's been a long time but I don't remember them being two colors. I remember it being a solid raspberry color. But in seven years, I guess pollination could have taken place. I will enjoy them very much no matter what color.

Christmas Cactus....?

I have waited almost 7 years for this to bloom. Now that's patience. But anyway, since it finally decided to bloom I thought I would show everyone. The rest of my family has great luck with them. But mine don't like to bloom This year they are both covered with buds and some are double buds, so I just had to share.

Spring Spruce Up

I got rid of the country blue everything and painted my canister lids black. I am in the process of painting my burner covers black. I was going to paint them red, but after putting the rugs down on the floor, that was all the red I wanted. You can have too much of a good thing. I got red towels, dish cloths and rugs. That really brightened up the kitchen and gave it a whole new look. It seems more cheerful just to walk into the kitchen now.
After about 7 years, I finally have my home the way I want it. Except for cleaning a few closets. Ha-ha! But that is an ongoing project.

We Made It!

Success! We have made it a week now and will take the weekend off. Our muscles are letting us know that for sure, we are doing them some good. The photos of the treadmills in both postings are from our gym. It is not a large gym but we have it to ourselves most days and the equipment is "top notch". We could not ask for better. The gym is well ventilated so this morning we just opened up the windows and had a good breeze going through which really felt good.
Yes, we are proud of ourselves for completing the week of exercise.

My First Spring Project

Today was such a great day. I got to cross off something on my "To Do" list without adding three more projects. Every spring there are always a few projects to do. I am changing my country kitchen to a more contemporary style. So the first thing to do was paint the lids to my canister jars black. I thought about silver but then vetoed that idea. Red will be my contrast color. My stove is already black and white so it fits right in with my redecorating. I also have a black horseshoe that I keep hanging above the sink. I keep hoping that will make all my recipes turn out right. Most times it works. But the first step to redecorating is done. I like the gallon jars as canisters as I can always tell when something is low and I need to buy more.

Couch Potato No More!

This will give you an idea of what we were doing for thirty minutes this afternoon. We decided an exercise regime would be beneficial to both of us. So we are a team now and plan to do the tread mill every day. I know my Dr. will be "over the moon" thrilled that I am actually exercising. He wants me to walk, but where I have to walk is on a slant. So figured this would do the trick. It definitely gets the heart rate going and the perspiration flowing. But I like swimming better. So this summer the tread mill is out and the pool is in.

The Red Fire Hydrant

Over the years, fire hydrants have been red and haven't changed much in shape. But have you ever wondered why they are red? I had always believed they were red because fire trucks were red. But as I investigated the fire hydrant, it seems they are different colors. The color designates the water flow rate per minute. This hydrant is under 500 gallons per minute. So there is actually a reason for the different colors. How in my naive little childhood world could I have believed that hydrants were only red.? Well, to me, it just made sense. After all, fire is red, therefore, all fire tydrants should be red. The narrow white pole attached to this hydrant, is so that when it snows, the Fire Dept. can find the hydrant.

I have a little pal I take on walks and he doesn't care what color the hydrant is.....it has only one purpose for him and it is not to put out fires. So my little pal, and you know who you are, this hydrant is for you and it is RED, as it should be.

As Time Goes On.......

Today I went to a small town to take photographs and was amazed that the small town atmosphere prevails. Neighbors chatting on the sidewalk, getting the latest news from each other. Moms and Grams leaving the local grocery with their daily groceries. Some of the shop proprietors were sweeping their sidewalks in front of their businesses.. It seems, as time goes on, buildings are abandoned, roads are closed and the old water pump that needs to be primed before using it, are becoming part of our past. There's a certain sadness in knowing that perhaps our own grandchildren will ask, "What's that thing, Gram?".
I'm glad we have indoor plumbing, don't get me wrong. But it just seems that certain things are being forgotten and that is sad. I drove for miles before seeing a windmill.

Small Town America

Today I visited small town America. There are so many small towns and you have to wonder how long they will thrive. Will there be enough business to keep the towns going? Well I, for one, certainly hope these little towns will forever be part of our culture .I stood out in the middle of the street today to set up my tripod and take some photos. Don't worry, no cars. were putting me in danger. Yes, that too, is part of a small town. There are cars but no heavy traffic. In fact, another car did not come by for five minutes. Once you leave the main street which is usually 2-3 blocks long, you can putts along at a very low speed to take it all in. You can make "U" turns at an intersection without worrying about getting hit by another car. Of course, not on the Main St. I was able to stay on public land while photographing things. The wonder of a zoom lens.
